movies.

it has been drawn to my attention that there are a lot of "classic movies" that i just have not seen. movies such as

  • signs
  • the ring
  • risky business
  • dumb an dumber
  • the goonies
  • godfather
  • monty python
  • indiana jones
  • termanator
  • the matrix
  • braveheart
  • the bourne movies
  • final destination
so if anyone out there thinks that i just simply MUST watch one of these movies then i am down. movie night?

summer 2009.

i can not believe summer 2009 is already here.

this blog is more for my own reflection rather than your reading pleasure. so whoever you are, if you decided not to read this blog that is totally understandable.

so far my summer vacation has been pretty good.
tuesday morning some of my roommates (manada and christina) woke me up and told me we were going to disneyland. so we went. just for the morning tho.

when i got back to school i had to start packing up my room. jacob and his friend charles came to help me move my stuff. that was so nice, i didn't really have to carry anything out. corinne and i then made a cribs stye video tour of our cottage. stay tuned, will be posting that soon. also took a trip to rite aid to get some ice cream with jennifer. that was a funny experience, we went to one and all their ice cream was frozen solid and they couldn't scoop into it. so we called another rite aid. and they were out of the flavors we wanted so we had to go to a third rite aid.

wednesday everyone from my cottage woke up and ate breakfast together. i am seriously so blessed to have gotten the opportunity to live with those girls this year. when i tell people that i lived in the cottage they normally said, "wow. nine girls all in that tiny house, how can you handle it?" but really we all got along so well. im excited that i get to live with three of the girls next year: corinne, justine, and molly. amy and teresa will be graduating on saturday and i will miss them for sure. and then amanda and christina both live close enough that i hope to see them this summer.

then after i moved out of my room i went to disneyland with jackie sam and andrew. but we were only there for a few hours. it was fun though. we watched honey i shrunk the audience... haven't seen that in years. it's always fun to do something new... or old.

when we got back to cbu the most random group of people had assembled for a late night beach trip. random group. so we went to the beach. walked around. and just sat on the sand.

then i spent the night at jackie's apt. because after being checked out of my housing assignment for  9 hours i still wanted to sleep at school.

then thursday morning we woke up and went to buy a bunch of tickets for the midnight showing of wovlerine. i came home and took a nap.

then i helped my mom cook some curry for dinner. delicious. i think im going to have a little bit more after i post this blog. we watched the office together and i really missed corinne and jordan who i normally watch it with.

then i went to the plaza to wait for wolverine to start. the theater was out of control full of cbu people. it was fun.  and we stayed behind to watch the final scene that plays after the credits roll. well someone stopped the movie and we all missed the final 10ish seconds of the movie and they gave everyone replacement tickets. nice.

well that has been my last three days. its been fun. if you actually read this blog im sorry for boring you. and im sorry for my worse than normal grammar and spelling. but it is 4 in the morning, so give me a break.
goodnight.

i found my calling.

claymation videos anyone?

this evening i had the longing to make another movie.
so i texted my friend drew and asked if he was down.

after a few hours this is what i have to present to you:

a nice summer themed thriller. drew wanted to make somehting epic, im not sure if this delivers.
there seems to be a reoccurring theme of violence in my claymations.
again the quality is horrible. i need to explore my other options for viral video sites.

now that i have completed my film class.

i can make movies!

presenting "when the banana crashed the dance."
character development- heather calfee
art direction- jackie gray
set design- rachel weinstein

i downloaded a trial version of istopmotion. it was really easy to use. until i tried to put some titles up in there. um and the song is sweet tangerine by the hush sound.
i think im going to redo the movie, becuase the quality is so bad. but i was so excited i decided to share it with the people of the internet today.

secret trips # 3 and #4

so wednesday night heather took us to go see these guys!
and i was so excited.the cast of mythbusters!!! they were at ucr.
so jamie and adam were absent (and holly i did totally lie to you we decided we were going to lie to people and tell them we met everyone cause that was cooler. sorry.)
we got to see bloopers and then there was a question and answer period. favortie moment of the night would be the 7 year old boy who asked carrie if she was single.

then this morning jackie and i went to the casting for deal or no deal!!! (heather and julia couldn't come.)
it was at the commerce outlet mall.
we waited in line for six hours!
and then they divided us up into groups of ten and we each had 30 seconds to tell them about our lives. i said "hi my name is rachel weinstein and i am a graphic design major at california baptist university. a random fact about my life is that last sumer when i was in cambodia i ate a fried turantula. and im leaving in a month to go to new orleans to work at a day camp."and the guy gave me a golden ticket!!! so i got to go on and have a second interview.
they asked me some more questions. the one that sticks out in my mind is 'what do you do for a living?" and i said im just a student and they asked what i did before. and i said, "well i was a elderly care giver for an 88 year old. so i lived at this jewish retirement center and played canasta."
(welcome to my random life, by the way.)

so basically i am in the system now and they could call me an tell me to come on the show at any time. or not. recently they had a guy on the show who applied in 2006! so its no quick process.

they also announced that deal or no deal is going into sydication and will be airing every night of the week in a new format. there will be 22 individuals each holding a case and howie will spin a wheel and it will land on a case and then that person gets to play the game. so they are casting more people than past seasons but even if you get on the show you aren't necessarily going to get to play.

mish. stay tuned there is a slim chance you will see this rockstar on tv.so maybe i need to learn how to keep my eyes open.
ohhhh tangent: in juno when juno and leah are sitting in the park looking at the penny saver juno says, "i was thinking something a lil more edgier like, graphic designer mid 30’s with an Asian girlfriend who like dresses awesome and rocks out on the bass guitar but i dont wanna be to particular"
thats like what i want my life to be!!!!! well except im the graphic designer and he is the cool asian who rocks out on the bass.

i was reminded why i only drink water, part 2!

tuesday morning i woke up at 730 when holly started making her morning coffee.
i had fallen asleep on the little love seat in our kitchen. seriously, who does that?
so i was super confused as i did not remember falling asleep. i walked back to my room and slept for a few more hours in my bed.
i woke up about 10:30 and took a shower.

my little brother came over to cbu today and he went to my classes with me.

young adult literature was so funny. there was a group presentation about some civil war novel and ths on girl in the group dressed up in full on confederate uniform.

so she is a civil war reenactor!!!! i have never know someone with a hobby like that. on the weekends she travels with her unit to a random location and then the spend the next two days reenacting the battles. she plays a young male soldier so last year when she got into this she had chop off her waist length hair. seriously. i had no idea people really did this. so crazy slash funny.

and then in my film class we watched this crazy acid trip movie, Koyaanisqatsi, that i loved.
at first i was totally not into it at all. but then i fell in love. im listing to some philip glass compositions right now.and i am finishing up projects. ew.

an unusual purchase.

so i hardly ever buy movies. i see them all the time. but i don't usually have the urge to by every movie that comes out. because of these reasons:

  1. collectively my friends have a pretty complete movie library. my room mate basically owns every movie a girl would want to see.
  2. i tend to fall asleep during movies
  3. i have decided to spend my movie money on movies in the theater. i love watching a movie with 100 strangers. i laugh much more when i i am surrounded by random people's laughter.
but i just pre ordered juno at amazon. i am pretty sure i have already talked about the awesomeness of this move.

more than re watching the movie i am excited to see the special features. the directors commentary. deleated scenes. outtakes.

thats another thing. if im going to buy a movie im going to get the extended version ever time that is an option. go big or go home, right?

in other movie news in my photo shop class i had to make a vector image using the pen tool. i hate the pen tool. its so hard for me. i have done so many tutorials. but i still have to stop and think about what im doing. which way i need to pull the little bar guys. ahhh.
well the theme of the project was you favorite movie. i never know how to answer that question. and i figured i had already lost all respect in that class when i turned in this project that i would just go for it and do sisterhood of the traveling pants.

so here it is.
kinda similar to the original, right? so if you have any images that you would like vectored i need the practice.

food fight.

"ethnic foodstuffs to re-enact the history of armed conflict since the Second World War. For example, the chapter on the Cold War shows a Big Mac rattling sabres with a pile of Beef Stroganoff and then skulking off-screen defeatedly."

saw this on Drawn! the illustration and cartooning blog.

because im a film student.

so now that im a film student (well im taking one film class) i am qualified to give my opinions about movies.

i just got back from seeing no country for old men. not really the type of movie i would choose to see if i could pick anything in the world. but it is up for like a million (8) oscar's.

meh. actually i really dont know what i want to say about it. uhh i liked how the credits just came on with no music. and i want to get an air gun. not because i want to kill people, i just think it would be fun to have the power to shoot out locks.

so these are my picks for the 80th annual oscars. in the categories i have an opinion in. now mind you i havent seen all the movies and in real life my fave movie is the sisterhood of the traveling pants.

Best Picture: JUNO! i rarely see a movie twice while in theaters, because im relatively cheap. but i saw it twice, and then watched it online illegally. and bought the soundtrack. and sean from degrassi was totally in it. and im an arrested devlopment fan. and my enlish teacher from sophomore year was jennifer garnier's room mate or something cool like that. and thoes are the reasons juno should win.

Actress: ellen page. she was hillarious. and i want to be her friend. and she is canadian (i think).

Supporting Actor: javier bardem. he was so creepy. and i think that makes him a good actor. but i wouldnt want his support any time soon.

Supporting Actress: saoirse ronan. the little sister from atonement. because she also mastered the creepy.

Director: im just going to pick juno in every category it got a nomination.

Original Screenplay: juno.

Animated Feature Film: surfs up. because shia is in it. but i havent seen any of these movies.

Sound Mixing:transformers. anyone who can make a monster truck talk did a good job mixing.

Sound Editing: ratatouille. getting a rat to talk seems harder than making a truck alien talk.

Original Song: raise it up from august rush.

Costume: hm. across the universe. although i loved that green dress in atonement.

27 dresses.

so turned in my application for ra. and this is something i really want to do. alot.
its seriously not even about the free housing (which would be nice) or the single room (which would be nice). its about getting to work with girls and build relationships and build community and the more i think about it the more love cbu. and i feel like i could do a good job of encouraging my residents to be the people God wants them to be. sadly though 150 applications were turned in for only 60ish spots. and a lot of great people applied. so if i dont get it i will be bummed but i know that there was someone better for the job and its just not the right time.
i had my interview on friday. and it was silly. overall i think i did a good job. i had fun, laughed a lot, cried a little. ended it off with a display of my coolest talent. i can stick my finger pretty far into my eyeball socket.
and then this morning form 8:30- 12 all the ra applicants had to go thorough a three part group interview process day thing. it was a lot of fun. we were split into nine groups and my group (pink2!) was awesome. some super nice people. we are pretty much all friends now and im excited to see them around campus!
after lunch and bible study i took a nap. it was so nice.

about five thirty chelsea jumped on top of me and woke me up.
:]
randomly chelsA called me monday and asked if i wanted to hang out with her. and i did. so we did.

we started out the night with panera and some great conversation. catching up is fun, there is always so much to talk about. and lots of laughing. we saw 27 dresses. so cute. nice chick flick. happy ending. love story. lots of laughs. see it if your into that sort of think. don't if your not.
coffee depot and back to the cottage for some more laughing, myspace stalking, and match.com applying. haha.
so after finishing my match.com profile we decided not to submit it. so sadly if my soul mate (whatever that means) is on that site i may never find him. but seriously the questions they as are super funny. so if you're ever bored and in the mood for a good laugh...
random fact:chelsea is compeating in the miss riverside pageant. im excited for her. she has to study the history and through her research (wikipedia) she learned that maeby from arrested development is totally from riverside.

film class.

so at first i wasnt sure what to think of this class. i was kinda intimadated by my teacher and the other students. on the first day we had to tell everyone what our favorite movie is. most people had these really deep movies that are commended for their cinematography. so i was getting pretty nervous, what should i say? i couldnt possibly be honest and tell the whole class my favorite movie is sisterhood of the traveling pants. so i said fight club. in hindsight i should have listed a few movies so people would think i was well rounded.

so my teacher is totally a member of the writers guild. so in my opinion class should be canceled while they are on strike. professor kevanos has this passionate rich voice. i just want him to narrate my life.

we started out watching thiss horrible racist film, Birth of a Nation.aside from being so dumb and promoting the reclamation the South after the uncivil blacks had destroyed the great southern values. the black cast members are portrayed as lesser beings. white supremacy is shown trough dialog and behaviors. even though the southerners had lost the civil war they retained their honor and dignity by caring for one another, and working hard for the cause. they were shown as the victims of slavery in America.

aside from that it was three hours long! and silent! ew.

then we watched battleship potemkin. i originally thought we might be viewing some russian version of pokemon (gotta catch em all!). but i was wrong.
the next movie was the german film metropolis. eh. nothing really to say about this one.

then we got to watch gold rush. a great charlie chaplin movie.
so funny!
like for reals laughing out loud.

then today we watched It Happened One Night. clark gable and claudette colbert. so cute. so funny. i was impressed. i still have about 20 minutes left that i still have to watch. but i am actually looking forward to doing that homework.
:]

so im looking forward to the rest of the class. now that we have gotten out of the silent era.
:]

thanks mlk jr.

thanks to the awesomeness that is martin luther king junior i had a awesome four day weekend (four-day because i never have school on fridays).

friday- i joined cindy, holly, and monica at pf changs. we feasted on yummy food (crispy honey shrimp is my fave) and had a great time. i love that place. riverside has really stepped it up restaurant wise. later that night kristin and i went to the movies. we saw atonement. it was pretty good. a nice mix of artsy stuff, history, mystery, suspense. the film moves super slow at times, but besides that and the glamorization of smoking it was two thumbs up. and im really a fan of the green dress kiera wore. its so glamorous. good movie. i would recommend it.

saturday- i slept way way in. and then cindy janai and i went to java bliss to get our study on. but they closed at 7 so we had to bounce over to my house for great conversations, homework, and guitar hero.

sunday- church at the grove. i went to "big church" and i think im learning i have the attention span of a junior higher. the service highlighted some of the trips that the church went on this past year, and educatated the members about the importance of going to the ends of the earth.

the past year and a half has been awesome in regards to my mission opportuinities. i got to go to mexico, chile, utah, and cambodia. but i really dont know what the Lord has in store for me this summer. Back to cambodia? hatti? utah? costa rica? tibet? job? summer camp? san fransisco? i just dont know...

after brunch janai and i watched a good ten hours of prison break season 2. it was intense. great show.

we went to sandals at 7. and i really dont know what to say.
ok i will say that sometimes all the "stuff" gets in the way of worship. and i know its not about whether or not i like the particular song we are singing... but whether or not it is pleasing to Gods ears. but for me smacking a beach ball around during the singing of Queen's "we will rock you" was pretty distracting from the reason i sing.

we came back form sandals and watched more prison break.
i fell asleep to this...

monday- kristin woke me up in time for lunch. following a 2 1/2 caf expierence we had a mlk photo shoot.

then some more prison break. we plowed through most of season two. we only have 2 episodes left! seriously and amazing show. i can not wait for season three to come out on dvd. (i cant watch it on real time tv because every single commercial break is a clif hanger and im too impatient to wait a whole week for a new episode...so i just wait months and watch it all in one foul swoop)(i know. fell swoop, but i have been saying fowl for years)

then i went to jonnie mac and drew's apartment. we played guitar hero.

i cleaned my room. did laundry. read some. painted my nails (gold sparkley). ate a few lemon heads. thanks for staying with me through this lonnnng blog. i think this is my longest yet. or maybe i just put some big pictures up in here to deceive you.

finals.

i can not believe that finals are here.
its crazy how fast time goes. crazy.

so its really weird staying in riverside over the breaks while all my cbu friends scatter across the country.

in the next few weeks there are going to be a ton of movies comming out that i really want to see

  1. sweeney todd
  2. atonement
  3. juno
  4. alvin and the chipmunks
  5. the kite runner
  6. walk hard
and then there are the movies that are already out that i want to see
  1. golden compass
  2. august rush (again)
  3. enchanted
  4. fred clause
  5. bee movie
the crazy thing is if i saw all thoes movies and paid the student price of $9.50 i would be spending $104.50!!!!!!

and even buying tickets from cbu at $6 a show im still spending $66!!!!!!
thats alot of money. dang.
but realistically i am not going to actually see all these movies.

im a failed musician.

i have no musical talent. i can not sing. i can not dance. i can not play instruments.
but i have tried.

in elementary school i played the violin, the cello, and the flute.
i was also involved in musical theater. aunt in guys and dolls (part of the uncle was changed for me). and the narrator in into the woods. just a villager in fiddler on the roof.

sometimes i miss it all alot. i think that if i had just stuck with the cello i would have been amazing.

so this weekend i saw august rush.
it was so good. if your into the sappy sort of love story that has a happy ending and lots of coincidences.
it was bad if your name is janai and you have no heart. (i was crying throughout the movie while janai sat there and rolled her eyes)

and now im into this weird cello rock sort of music.
apocalyptica, murder by death, and rasputina

converts.

sience i decided to limit my myspacing and facebooking i have converted three friends to the world of blogs.

abby was the first to jump in. she is super cool. and she is from minnesota, which makes her even cooler. last year she lived diagonaly across the hall from me. i met her becasuse one of the first days of orientation last year she wrote a note on sydney's white board saying hi. then i looked her up on myspace. and she encoraged me to get a facebook. so now i guess it has gone full circle.

next katelyn, abby's bff from mn started a blog. i finnaly got to meet her this summer and we all went to back to the grind and played phase ten. she has not been updating that frequently. katelyn, you need to step it up.

several days ago jillian finally started her blog. she is my room mate. and my friend. she is also super cool. or should i say hecka cool? she is from nor cal, after all. uh im pretty sure we met because we both did not have a 11:15 class seccond semister and then we had our 12:20 class together with dr m. so we would eat lunch and then go to class. she would eat pasta every day.

and yesterday kristin started one as well. she is from norway. no thats a lie. she is from ontario canada. that is also a lie. she actually is from ontario california. i dont really remember how we met. sorry. but she lives in my cottage. and she plays the piano. and her taste in music would lead one to believe she is a pot head. she is a pot head. no, thats a lie too.

so like the movie pay it forward if we all just get one more person to blog and they can get one more person to blog eventually the world will be a better place.
:]

transformers, more than meets the eye.

transformers came out on video yesterday.
i guess it would be more correct to say, "transformers came out on DVD yesterday."

and my roommate picked up her copy.
enoch, john, abby, and kristin came over to watch the movie. transformers is pretty cool.

my friends are all a little obsessed with shia labeouf.
example: for the premiere of disturbia (another shia flick) we all made shirts with his face on them.
i dont like shia, but i like shirts.
